For the last 30 years, international summer schools in plasma physics have been held at Culham Laboratory, in Oxfordshire. Culham is the United Kingdom centre for research in magnetically confined fusion plasmas, and is the site of the Joint European Torus. This book has been developed from lectures given at these schools, and provides a wide-ranging introduction to the theoretical and experimental study of plasmas and their applications. The first few chapters deal with the fundamentals of plasma physics, covering such topics as particle dynamics, kinetic theory, waves and magnetohydrodynamics. Subsequent chapters describe the applications and properties of man-made and naturally occurring plasmas. These include magnetically confined fusion plasmas, industrial and laser-produced plasmas, as well as gravitational, solar, space and magnetospheric plasmas. In addition, there are chapters devoted to general phenomena such as turbulence and chaos. The computational techniques employed in modelling plasma behaviour are also described. Since no prior knowledge of plasma physics is assumed, this book will act as an ideal introduction to the subject for final year undergraduates and beginning graduate students in physics, astronomy, mathematics and engineering.

CUP draft Sept. 2004.
This text is based on a course I have taught for many years to first year graduate and senior-level undergraduate students at Caltech. One outcome of this teaching has been the realization that although students typically decide to study plasma physics as a means towards some larger goal, they often conclude that this study has an attraction and charm of...
Cambridge University Press, 2003. The present book has its origins in our earlier book Plasma Dynamics published in 1969. Many who used Plasma Dynamics look ihe trouble to send us comments, corrections and criticism, much of which we intended to incorporate in a new edition. In the event our separate preoccupations so delayed this that we came to the conclusion that we should...
Cambridge University Press, 2007. Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy is a textbook about plasma physics, although i( is plasma physics with a mission - magnetic fusion energy. The goal is to provide a broad, yet rigorous, overview of the plasma physics necessary to achieve the half century dream of fusion energy. The pedagogical approach taken here fits comfortably within an...
