Lovell P.A., El-Aasser M.S. (ed.) Emulsion Polymerization and Emulsion Polymers
Chichester: Wiley, 1997. - 802 p. The book has been designed to provide an up-to-date treatment of academic and industrial aspects of emulsion polymerization in a single self-contained volume with introductory chapters for those readers who are not familiar with the underlying science. The objective was to integrate established knowledge with the latest developments in a form which gives a state-of-the-art summary that is also suitable as a broadly based introduction to the field. Given the breadth of the subject-matter, an early decision was taken to have the individual chapters written by specialists from academia and industry. The treatment of subject matter is not intended to be exhaustive, but is aimed to present critical features and sufficient background to enable the reader to understand the important points in an easy way. Each chapter provides references which will enable the reader to pursue any of the topics to greater depth. The chapters are divided into five distinct sections, covering the underlying science, theory, practical aspects, industrial uses, and related polymerizations. The Basic Science section provides overviews of free-radical polymerization and the stabilization of polymer colloid dispersions, together with a summary of the principal features and current issues in emulsion polymerization. These chapters are included principally for those readers who are not familiar with aspects of the science underlying emulsion polymerization, though other readers also should benefit from consulting the material presented. The sections on Theory, Practice and Major Industrial Uses are the main focus of the book. They are designed to provide thorough accounts of theoretical, experimental and industrial aspects of emulsion polymerization and emulsion polymers, including polymer and latex characterization. Although the focus is on conventional emulsion polymerization, the final section. Related Heterogeneous Polymerizations, is important because it places these reactions in perspective within the subject as a whole.
