обмерами Д. В. Милеева, значительная часть которых публикуется впервые (НА ИИМК РАН,
НИМ РАХ). В Приложениях объединены публикации Д. В. Милеева и архивные источники,
относящиеся к жизни и трудам архитектора, — отчеты, письма и другие материалы. Книга
предназначена для специалистов — историков, искусствоведов, археологов и интересующихся
историей русской науки и культуры.
The monograph is dedicated to Dmitrii Vasil’evich Mileev (1878-1914), one of the most
important researchers and restorers of Russian architecture around the turn of the twentieth
century, the staff architect of the Imperial Archaeological Commission. Mileev’s scholarly works had
a decisive influence on the development of architectural archaeology, scientific restoration and the
practice of preserving objects of cultural heritage in Russia. Between 1905 and 1914, Mileev
carried out a large amount of research and restoration on works of Early Russian architecture dating
from the tenth to nineteenth centuries. Travelling on assignments from the Academy of Arts, Mileev
surveyed dozens of examples of wooden architecture in the Russian North, many of which have
since been lost. In the archaeological sphere, through his excavations of the Church of the Tithe in
Kiev, Mileev laid the foundations of architectural archaeology in our country. For the celebration
of the 300th anniversary of the House of Romanov in 1913, a large-scale restoration of the Ipat’ev
Monastery was carried out under his direction.
For the remainder of the twentieth century, though, Mileev became a neglected figure in this
country’s historical architectural science. In view of this, the authors have set themselves the aim of
carrying out a comprehensive study of the outstanding architectural scholar’s biography and address
themselves to his unpublished scholarly legacy (surveys, projects, reports, journals, letters) and
beyond to the outstanding theoretical developments and practical experience of Russian scholarship
in the early twentieth century in the realm of architectural archaeology, scientific restoration and
the preservation of monuments.
