The concept of a course in advanced calculus has a long history in American colleges and universities. Quite naturally, the concept has not remained static. Nor does it have exactly the same connotation to all teachers, students, and users of mathematics at any given time. There are a variety of needs to be served by a textbook in advanced calculus. In planning this edition of our book, we have retained the basic qualities that contributed to user satisfaction with the first two editions while changing and introducing some new features that we believe to be important as well as appropriate in the light of current conditions.
