White Harvey E., White Donald H., Gould Mauri. Laboratory Manual. Physics an experimental science
Princeton, New Jersey, London, Toronto, Melbourne: D. Van Nostrand Company, 1968. — 146 p.
This Laboratory Manual for Physics - An Experimental Science is designed to be used as a laboratory guide for students enrolled in any introductory course in fundamental physics. It is a distinct departure from the traditional oversize formats with their fill-in blanks. The approach to experiments emphasizes discovery, rather than confirmation of previously learned information, part of that discovery being gained through actual construction of the necessary apparatus. The scientific method of today is one of experimentation. It is a procedure in which a problem or objective is clearly stated and this is followed by a review of relevant theories and experimental observations of others. A particular theory is established. An experiment is designed which is practical and capable of being performed at the student’s level of sophistication and within the laboratory facilities available. Apparatus is then constructed and assembled, observations of events are made, and quantitative measurements are recorded in tabular form. Results are calculated according to the indicated theory and conclusions are made, usually presented in the forms of graphs and one or more statements.
