In 1995, we began to think that the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Meteorological Society in the year 2000 ought to be the occasion of a major conference. The conference took place from 10 to 14 July 2000, and was attended by some 250 people. We did not start out with the idea of making a book from the conference.
